Exhibition
The Maarten Van Severen .03 Chair
The first concrete realization by the MVS Foundation was the exhibition 'The Maarten Van Severen .03 Chair', which showed at the Design Museum Ghent from 20th November, 2010 to 27th February, 2011, at Master Meubel (Furniture) in Turnhout from 26th March to 6th May, 2011, and at Le Grand Hornu Images from 18th March to 17th June, 2012.
The exhibition presented for the first time the history of the .03 chair, Maarten Van Severen’s most successful item of furniture. It encompassed some one hundred documents and thirty three-dimensional items. Based on sketches, design drawings, prototypes, material studies and correspondence, the designer’s patient search is brought into focus. In addition to the archive items, testimonies were shown of people who were involved in seeing the chair being brought to realization, and photos were on show of various location interiors where the .03 was an integral part.
Most of the items came from the Maarten Van Severen archive itself. A few other items came from the Aiki (Top-Mouton) and Vitra archives, respectively the producers of the Chair N° II and the .03. The exhibition literally laid on the table the archive material of the Maarten Van Severen chairs, enabling us to acquire greater insight into his design method and into the history of the .03.
